Auto Restoration as a Hobby? Is it for You?

So, Auto restoration as a Hobby. As opposed to what? Obviously, opposed to someone that does it for a living. Performing body work is a difficult job. If it's done right.
Restoring a vehicle is a dirty, nasty job. Welding, grinding, cutting is not something to take lightly.

I just want you to realize that if you are thinking about restoring your car or truck and it will be your first attempt at body work, just realize it is a labor intense job.
And it is something you can get hurt at, very easily if you don't pay attention to what your doing.

Another thing you must consider is the specialty tools that are required when restoring a vehicle.
One major piece of equipment i would highly recommend is an air compressor
I remember when i started on my first project car, i used a portable air compressor.
I believe it was something like a 5 Horse power, with a 13 gallon tank.

Don't get me wrong, they are great little compressors, but trying to do a big project, it can get very aggravating fast.
Waiting around for the pressure to build up to use the cut off wheel every 5 minutes gets old quickly.
You can restore a car with these portable units, but they do have there limitations.
Currently i have a 80 Gallon NAPA brand air compressor and it can handle any job i need done.

I will list just a few of the tools you will need that you may have not thought about.

  • A decent set of Hammers and Dolly. The variety of dollys out there are many. But i believe just the basics can get you by. (Toe Dolly, General purpose Dolly, Toe and edge dolly)
  • A good Mig welder with the capability of using a shielding gas (Argon Gas)
  • Something to cut out rusted floor pans and panels. A wide variety of tools are out there to accomplish this. Plasma Cutter,Metal shears, Nibbler shears, Tin snips
  • Bench Grinder
  • Vise (A must have) get the Wilton
  • Power tools and Air Tools
  • As many Clamps as you can buy (Locking C Clamps)
  • Grinders, cut-off-wheel,
